Is Your Skin Dry or Dehydrated? Why One Solution Doesn't Work For The Other

Dry or Dehydrated?  Why one solution won’t work for the other

Marcy Paul from Colorado wrote in a few weeks ago with and asked us this question.

“I think I have persistent dry skin but I’m not sure.  I moisturize, I drink a ton of water, I do all the things I’m supposed to do but my skin still seems to be really dull complexion and always feels tight.  What gives? I’ve been trying things for years and nothing works. Can you help?”  Marci Paul, Aspen, Colorado

This is quite a common question because it’s very easy to confuse a skin type with a skin condition.

Let’s start with a simple question.  Is your skin dry or is your skin dehydrated?

Many people confuse the two or even use both terms thinking they are the same.  They are not the same and if you’ve been constantly dealing with dry and/or dehydrated skin you’ve most likely been doing the wrong things.

“Dry skin is a skin type.  Dehydrated skin is a skin condition.  You can have dry skin AND suffer from dehydrated skin at the same time.” – Leslie Iddison, Director of Customer Experience, Saranghae Means I Love You

In the following article, we will explain to you the difference between Dry skin and Dehydrated skin, why it matters to you and lastly what you should be doing to solve both skin concerns.

If you understand what they are and how to treat them correctly, we guarantee that you will not suffer from them any longer.

Dry skin is when your skin is not producing enough protective oils on it’s own.

If you have dry skin you may experience patches of flakiness, redness, irritation and your most likely prone to sensitivity.  Dry skin can happen to anyone at any age but you’re going to experience more frequent bouts of dry skin as you get older because your skin gradually loses the ability to produce oils for your skin.

Dehydrated skin is not a skin type, it’s a skin condition that can affect anyone.  This means that no matter your skin type (oily, dry, combination) you can still have dehydrated skin.  Dehydrated skin means just that, it is lacking water.

If you are suffering from dehydrated skin you may see dull complexion, a lack of skin radiance and will feel tighter than normal.

Dehydrated skin is common and you can have both dry skin AND dehydrated skin at the same time.

So I know what many of you are thinking right now: Ok, I’ll just drink more water everyday. Drinking plenty of water helps but the reality is that it’s not enough.  Only about 5% of the water that you drink will help with the hydration levels of your skin.

What we highly recommend for dehydrates skin is to implement a simple skincare routine that includes multiple hydrating steps that layer on top of  one another to pack layers of water into your skin.

For example, you can start with a hydrating facial mist, followed by a hydrating serum that penetrate past your dermis skin layer and using products that have ingredients like hyaluronic acid are fantastic because they act like sponges that drink up the water molecules and trap them inside the layers of your skin.

Now if you’re experiencing  patches of flakiness, redness, irritation then you want to try a solution to help with dry skin.

We recommend moisturizers or creams that have a really nice and rich texture like balms or butter like textures that will act almost like a blanket or seal for your skin.  Using creams and serums that feature Ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil and ceramides will help restore your skin’s essential fatty acids.
